Today was the perfect day for a cup of hot cocoa! Well, it was here in Indiana, anyway! It snowed pretty much ALL DAY yesterday. And while it was pretty from INSIDE, it sure wasn’t fun to drive in. Ugh. It was actually my husband that did all the driving while I just sat in the passenger’s seat becoming more and more paranoid as we saw more and more cars either stuck in a ditch or completely do a 360 while trying to exit the highway RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. Luckily, we made it home safely (after needing to be pushed out of our friends’ subdivision at one point). Once we were safely home and fully warmed up, THEN it was pretty to look outside the windows at all of the snow on the ground!
Once we woke up this morning, we knew there was lots of shoveling to do outside. And the kids had lots of playing to do. After spending WAY too long bundling up all three kids and then myself, we finally made it outside to play. While my husband and I shoveled layers and layers of snow off of our driveway, the kids ‘helped’ us with their little shovels and then played in the big pile of snow that the plow driver usually pushes right up in front of our house. My daughter likes to ride her sled down this “big” pile of snow, but the sled ride lasts all of 1 1/2 seconds. Either way, she enjoys herself! After plenty of playing (in the below freezing temperatures) and more shoveling than I care to do in an entire year, we came back inside. After stripping all of the kids down (again, this takes way longer than you would ever expect…), it was shower-time for everyone. After we were all warmed up and clean, my kids were ready for their hot cocoa. They know we ALWAYS have hot cocoa after playing outside in the snow and will bug me repeatedly until I make some for them. In years past, I almost always purchased packs of Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix. Want to know what’s in those packets? Ok, I’ll tell you… Sugar, corn syrup, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated coconut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglycerides, carrageenan, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, and artificial flavor. Wow. That’s a lot of unnecessary ingredients! The hot cocoa mix that I made today has TWO ingredients! Organic cane sugar and cocoa powder. So simple…and so easy…but so tasty. I found this “recipe” from Whole Lifestyle Nutrition and knew it was something I wanted to try right away. Can’t beat a two ingredient recipe for a homemade mix!!
Hot Cocoa Mix
(Recipe Source: Whole Lifestyle Nutrition)
- 1 cup organic cane sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder (I use raw organic cacao powder)
Place into a large jar, screw on lid, shake until all mixed together!
When you’re ready to make hot cocoa, just warm up 6 oz of milk (I use organic whole or 2% milk, but almond milk would be great too), then whisk in 2 T of this mix. That’s it! It’s delicious just as it is, however, you could also add a drop of peppermint extract, a little maple syrup, or even a dash of cinnamon for a little something extra!
This mix makes enough for several cups of hot cocoa, but I’ve found that I usually double the recipe these days so it lasts longer. I keep the mix waiting in the pantry so it’s ready and waiting for the next time we play outside in the snow. (I’m guessing that will probably be tomorrow!) I don’t think the snow is going anywhere for at least a few days!! Maybe we’ll even have a white Christmas this year?? I would love that…as long as the roads are clear and I don’t have to drive in it. 🙂
