Taco Seasoning

We love Mexican food in this household. I love how easy it is and everyone always gobbles it up! I make everything from tacos to quesadillas to nachos to enchiladas to chimichangas. Yum!

I used to buy packets of taco seasoning from Kroger to season my meat. I quickly realized those had to go when we decided to eat only ‘real food.’ The Kroger brand contains (in this order): maltodextrin, salt, chili pepper, onion (dehydrated), spices (why not list them??), monosodium glutamate, modified corn starch, garlic (dehydrated), partially hydrogenated soybean oil and silicon dioxide (anticaking agent). That’s a lot of unnecessary, fake ingredients. Note: Some brands are better than others. However, after seeing how easy it is to make your own, you won’t WANT to buy them from the store anymore.

At the first farmers’ market I went to several months ago, I purchased a pre-made batch from one of the vendors, but was not impressed with it at all. We finally used that up a few weeks ago and I’ve been so excited to finally try making my own. I did yesterday and we all loved it! I can’t believe it took me 31 years to realize I could make my own so easily! I came up with a recipe that everyone in our family likes: it’s not too spicy and it has just the right amount flavor. My daughter even said this taco seasoning was “perfect.” I always like to hear that. 🙂

Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

*Organic spices are ideal. I’m slowly replacing my old spices with organic.

  • 4 T chili powder
  • 4 tsp ground cumin
  • 4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Whisk (or shake) until combined. Store in an air-tight container until needed. (I store mine in a jelly jar.)

How to use:

After browning one pound of ground beef/turkey/chicken (local, grass-fed/free-range is ideal), add 1/4 cup water and 1 – 2 T taco seasoning mix (depending on if you want more or less spice). Stir until well blended. Use as indicated in recipe.

Nachos
Yummy baked nachos!

Baked nachos is one of my favorite meals because it’s so simple but always pleases my entire family! I also use my homemade taco seasoning in several other recipes…

Really, if you’ve never made your own taco seasoning before, you must try this! This is too simple not to make yourself…and you won’t be disappointed. The taste is “perfect!” 🙂 You’ll never need (or want) to buy individual taco seasoning packets again!

  1. Did you have a post that had a smaller batch amount? I’ve been using your recipe for a month or two and love it, but when I pulled it up today, I think it’s different?

    1. Hi Shanna! I am so sorry I’m just now seeing this comment–I’m not sure how it slipped through without me seeing a notification! I’m glad you like the recipe! Yes, I used to have the ‘single serving’ posted but took it down because I figured most people would prefer to make a larger batch to save time. It’s simply 1/4th of the recipe above.

Here is the recipe for a single 2T serving (like most recipes call for):
      1 T chili powder
      1 tsp ground cumin
      1 tsp salt
      1/2 tsp paprika
      1/4 tsp garlic powder
      1/4 tsp onion powder
      1/4 tsp dried oregano
      1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

      Hope that helps!

    1. Hi Christine! Super simple… organic tortilla chips, ground beef with my taco seasoning, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese…that’s it! Of course, you can always add more, but my kids prefer me to keep it simple. 🙂
